Old Leather

The Mynarski Memorial Lancaster Bomber, now at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario, was built over 70 years ago in 1945. The many years of service can be seen in the dimples and dents, patches and repairs. You can also see the love and care that it receives at the museum. I'm so lucky to live nearby and to see it fly every weekend in the summer. The photo is a detail of the tail fin. Bruised but sound, aged like finely crafted leather.

  • The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum just outside Hamilton, Ontario is full of wonderful planes and history. What makes the museum exceptional is the volunteers working there. I believe that most of them have been involved in aviation in their 'work lives' and they are so helpful and friendly. One of them pointed out this penny in the engine of a North American Harvard (1951) - apparently the mechanics would use a penny as a gasket to record the date of the last maintenance.
